First Level Discipline: Hydraulic Engineering(0815)
The Hydraulic Structure Engineering of Hohai University is one of the earliest and most developed disciplines of its kind in China. It was founded by Academician Xu Zhilun in 1952. In 1981, the subject was granted the rights to confer master 's degree and doctorate' s degree simultaneously. In 1990, the mobile post-doctoral station was built. In 1996, it became a key discipline of the Ministry of Water Resources. Next year, it became key discipline of “211 Project”(The 211 Project is strategic cross-century project formulated by the Chinese government for the implementation of the strategy of invigorating the country through science, technology and education) under the Ministry of Education. In 1999, the department established the post of special professor of the Yangtze Scholar Reward plan of the ministry of education. In 2001, it established the Center of Safety Research of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering under the Ministry of Education and was rated as the national key discipline. The subject is currently led by academician Wu Zhongru. Other double employed academicians such as Zhou Junliang and Chen Houqun are academic advisors and a group of teachers with doctoral degrees are the main body of the subject.

The discipline of Hydraulics and River Dynamics is one of the most powerful traditional disciplines in Hohai University. It has made a great contribution to the construction of our country's water conservancy. It is an influential subject at home and abroad. In 1981, itbecame the first batch of disciplines with the authority to confer doctorate and master degrees in China. In 1994, it was approved by the People's Government of Jiangsu province to become the first group of key disciplines. In 1996, it became the national key discipline of “211 Project” under the Ministry of Education. In 1999, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the "Yangtze Scholars Program" specially appointed professors posts.In 2001, the Research Center of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Safety Engineering of the Ministry of Education was jointly established with the discipline of Hydraulic Structure under the approval of the Ministry of Education.

In 1984, the subject of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering obtained the right to confer the master's degree. It got the right to confer the doctoral degree and established the mobile post-doctoral station in 1993. In 1996, it became the national key construction subject of "211 Project". With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the Research Center of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Safety Engineering of the Ministry of Education was jointly established with the discipline of Hydraulic Structure in 2001.At present, the subject has a group of young professors and doctorates as academic leaders; Lu Youmei, Zhou Junliang, and other double employed academicians were appointed as scientific research consultants, and a number of doctoral teachers with doctoral degree were the principle part of subject.

Water Disaster and Water Safety belongs to the first level discipline of Hydraulic Engineering. It is a new discipline that combines basic research and applied research to meet the need of sustainable and harmonious development in the new period and serve water conservancy and environment engineering. The subject takes the academician Wu Zhongru as the academic leader. There are 12 doctoral supervisors, 15 professors and 7 associate professors. It mainly studies the formation mechanism, safety monitoring, prevention and control technologies, risk analysis, and safety management of floods and debris flows. Our university has obvious advantages in the aspects of prediction and prevention of water disasters, comprehensive evaluation of water project safety, disaster prevention and reduction technologies, and water safety management. Taking The State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center for Water Resources Efficient Utilization and Engineering Safety and the Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering Safety Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education as the teaching and research platforms , the cooperation and exchange at home and abroad have been widely carried out. The subject has been responsible for many key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, "863" Projects (the National High-tech R&D Program of China) and "973" Projects (the National Program on Key Basic Research Project), and international cooperation projects. It has won 3 second prizes for National Science and Technology Progress, 3 third prizes, 4 first prizes for scientific and technological progress at provincial and ministerial level, and dozens of second and third prizes. 12 monographs and hundreds of papers in important journals at home and abroad have been published in recent years, of which SCI, EI and ISTP account for about 20%. With the development of national economy and the utilization of water resources, the subject of water disaster and water security will face unprecedented opportunities and prospects.

Project Management of Water Conservancy is a new discipline aims to comply with the development of “comprehensive management” of China's water conservancy and hydropower. This subject belongs to the first-level discipline of Hydraulic Engineering and combines basic research and applied research to adapt to new sustainable development. It also serves other disciplines such as water conservancy and civil engineering. The discipline currently has a group of young and middle-aged professors and Ph.D. student advisers as academic leaders. Lu Youmei and other academicians are employed as scientific research consultants, and a group of teachers with doctorates as academic subject of discipline.

The discipline of Hydropower Engineering Construction and Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering in Hohai University is developed on the basis of the original discipline of Water Conservancy and Irrigation. As a traditional discipline of Hohai University, it has formed comparatively strong advantages after fifty years of construction and has made great contributions to the national economic construction and personnel training.
The discipline centers on the needs of planning, management and protection of water and land resources in the countryside of our country, perfectly combines the agriculture, water conservancy and the environment, and emphatically studies the relationship among water, soil and crops in the agricultural production. The pattern of water, soil and solute transport in agricultural environment and its control and management technology and engineering have a higher academic level in research directions of water-saving irrigation and farmland drainage, comprehensive utilization of agricultural water and soil resources, modernization of pumping station projects and irrigated areas, as well as the protection of agricultural water and soil environment.
It has advanced instruments and equipments at home and abroad, such as automatic drainage demonstration system, time domain reflectometer, AP Porometer, portable photosynthesis measuring system, fixed lysimeter with corridor and rainshed, automatic measuring system of variable slope soil grooves and so on.The water-saving park of Hohai University of the Ministry of Water Resources covers an area of about 30hm2. It integrates water-saving in cities, daily life, and agriculture, as well as environmental protection and management. It has four functions: research and development, teaching and training, application and popularization, demonstration and demonstration. The discipline has a group of well-known experts who have great influence at home and abroad, forming a scientific research group with young scientific and technological workers as the main body. Team members of the discipline come from water conservancy, soil, agriculture, resources and environment, and other fields. Intersected multi-disciplines and rich vitality laid a solid foundation for the entire group of people to solve China's major scientific research issues.
Master's programs of the discipline were approved in 2000; In 2003, doctorate programs were approved. In recent years, the discipline of Hydropower Engineering Construction and Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering has cultivated nearly 100 postgraduate students for China, as well as a large number of international undergraduates and postgraduates for many developing countries in Asia and Africa, and has made great contributions to the construction of water conservancy and hydropower in China, especially in rural areas.
The discipline has undertaken more than 100 major national projects, such as the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Technologies R&D Program of China, key scientific and technological projects at provincial or ministerial levels, as well as projects concerning the production, etc. Its major research achievements have reached at the international advanced level.

The displine of Agro-biological Environment and Energy Source Engineering is developed on the basis of the discipline of Agricultural Environment and Small Hydropower Engineering. It is one of the second level disciplines under the first level discipline of Agricultural Engineering. The discipline of Agro-biological Environment and Energy Source Engineering relies on the faculty of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Hydraulic Structure Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Combined with Biology, Environmental Science, Energy Studies, Architecture, Computer Control and Mechatronics, as well as other disciplines, current researches mainly focus on the mechanism and prevention of agricultural water and soil environmental pollution, the couple effect of water and fertility of crops under protected agricultural cultivation as well as the water-saving irrigation, and the resource utilization of agricultural wastes and the development of new energy resources in rural areas.
At present, the discipline mainly contains following research directions:
1. The protection of agricultural water and soil environment: analysis of the mechanism and prevention of agricultural water and soil environmental pollution, the migration and transformation of pollutants in soil, plant, and water, etc.
2. The eco-environmental effects of inferior water irrigation: the technological measures of low-cost and high-efficiency purification of inferior irrigation water and treatment of polluted soil and water environment, and the ecological analysis of inferior water irrigation's influences on soil and water environment and biological agents.
3. The control over protected agriculture and bio-environment: the pattern of water-saving irrigation and the coupling effect of water and fertilizer, and the mechanism of water-saving, high-yield and high-quality crops under protected agricultural cultivation.
4. The exploitation and utilization of new energy resources in rural areas: the exploitation and utilization of biomass energy and new energy resources in rural areas, the harmless treatment and the resource utilization of agricultural wastes, material and energy basis for sustainable developments of rural and agricultural production, etc.
Currently, the staff contain 9 professors, 13 associate professors, 14 lecturers, including 11 doctors and 23 masters. The discipline has the Research Institute of Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering, the Research Institute of Agro-biological Environment, the Key Laboratory for Water Resources Development and Utilization of the Ministry of Education, etc. The discipline undertook more than 40 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China , the National Key Technologies R&D Program of China, Agricultural Water-saving Projects in the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), Provincial Key Scientific and Technological Projects, National Key Projects of Scientific and Technological Achievements and Commissioned Scientific and Technological Research Projects, with nearly 50 achievements, two of which were listed as "Awards for National Scientific and Technological Achievements." More than 60 papers have been published in core journals at home and abroad, 9 awards have been awarded at the national and provincial levels, and 5 monographs have been published. Several scientific research achievements have been appraised by national, provincial and ministerial organizations. Quite a lot of research results stand at the world and they have been popularized and applied in over ten provinces and municipalities throughout China. On the whole, the discipline enjoys comparatively high academic status at home and abroad.
In 2003, the discipline was approved to confer master's degree by the Ministry of Education and the enrollment started the same year.The graduates who major in this discipline are mainly engaged in the research and development of agro-biological environment and its engineering facilities as well as the exploitation and utilization of new energy resources in rural areas.Graduates of this discipline will have guaranteed career prospects.

First Level Discipline: Utilization Science of Agricultural Resources(0903)
In 2005, the discipline in Hohai University was approved to confer master's degree by the Ministry of Education. The discipline mainly studies the basic theories and technical methods of rational exploitation and effective utilization and protection of agricultural water and soil resources, and provides the theoretical and technical support for the sustainable development of agricultural production. The discipline relies on the faculty of Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering, Agro-biological Environment and Energy Source Engineering as well as other disciplines in the College of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering. The discipline has cooperations with the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Soil and Fertilizer Station of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Jiangsu Province, the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Institute of Resources and Environment of the Academy of Agriculture of Jiangsu Province. Its studies mainly center on agricultural water and soil conservation, hydro-melioration, land consolidation, ecological restorations of polluted soils and soils obstacle and its fertilization in protected agriculture, etc.
There is a laboratory of soil and agricultural environment, an experimental center of agricultural water and soil engineering as well as a base of open-field high-tech facility agricultural science and engineering. There is a batch of internationally advanced equipments. Besides, the discipline has gained good conditions and development opportunities provided by the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education for high efficiency irrigation and drainage and agriculture, soil and water environment in south area. The discipline not only enrollment to agricultural resources utilization and other undergraduate majors, but also enrollment from agriculture, agricultural engineering, biology related disciplines.

The discipline specializes in the cultivation of expertise who can do scientific researches independently in the field of Soil Science. They are required to be familiar with the research trends and frontier issues of Soil Science at home and abroad. They need to be able to write scientific thesis and conduct academic exchanges in English. Innovative achievements should be gained in theoretical or technical researches.
